HELEN BALL

Infant sleep—what Doula's need to know

In this talk Helen will explore how and why babies sleep as they do, and how to help parents develop realistic expectations of their baby’s sleep. We will consider different perspectives for conceptualising ‘normal’ infant sleep, and how these influence parents’ concerns and anxieties. I will share resources that doulas can use to signpost parents to appropriate support and strategies when they experience difficulties with infant sleep.

About Helen:

Professor (Dr) Helen Ball is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre, & Baby Sleep Information Source (BASIS), Department of Anthropology, Durham University, Durham, UK.  She researches the sleep ecology and behaviour of parents and babies, infant sleep development, and the discordance between biological and cultural views on sleep. Her research is used in national and international policy and practice guidelines on infant care, and was awarded the 2018 Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Her book How Babies Sleep will be published by Penguin Random House in May 2025.

PAM ENGLAND

Talk: Change the Story your Client Brings to Birth, During Your Antenatal Appointments

Pam England's two-hour presentation will introduce an innovative birth preparation: Exploring the birth story that mothers and parents will bring to birth.

Many people assume that birth stories only begin during labor, or are created after the birth. But, a birth story is "seeded" before pregnancy and labor, and that seed grows birth-related preferences, avoidance, decisions, and judgments.

For decades childbirth preparation has emphasized acquired knowledge. However, there's an inner preparation that's more meaningful and personal. And because doulas have rapport and  time during prenatal appointments, they are in the ideal position to help parents examine and expand the narratives they are bringing to their births.

In this talk Pam will share the philosophical foundation and demonstrate her unique approach to "inner" preparation and transformation--and inspire you to add something new to your prenatal appointments.

About Pam:

Pam's first book, Birthing From Within (1998), was a groundbreaking work that significantly impacted the field of childbirth education. Its popularity created a demand for a mentor and doula training and certification program, which she founded in 1999. Pam then spent many years (until 2016) traveling across the United States and abroad, teaching the Birthing From Within philosophy and processes.  She is still teaching these principles and processes in her new project for pregnant moms, Right From the Start: The First 28 Weeks and in courses at the Birth Story School.

Over the past 40 years, she developed the principles and an effective process called Birth Story Medicine®. In addition, Pam founded The Birth Story School (2013) to teach aspiring birth story mentors and birth professionals how to lead this inspiring and healing process for others.

Formerly a certified nurse-midwife (trained at Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky), Pam worked in hospitals, birth centers, and home birth settings for eighteen years. Her interest in preventing and resolving emotional birth trauma led her to earn a master’s degree in psychological counseling. Currently, she is teaching courses on the Archetype of Initiation, the Alchemy of Transformation, and a birth story specialist apprenticeship called Open Your Ear.

Olwen Rowe

Talk: How do we Safely Introduce Expectant and New Parents to the Whys and Hows of using Baby Slings and Carriers.

In this talk, we’ll look at resources that are useful for doulas and other professionals to safely introduce the idea of using baby slings and carriers. An appropriate sling or carrier can be an indispensable and practical solution that allows adults to meet their own needs as well as their baby’s.  In the session, I will explore how we can effectively support parents and caregivers to learn how to incorporate popular sling safety guidelines into a larger understanding of caring for a baby and keeping them safe. In order to give a context for safety considerations and guidelines, I will look at examples of how different countries have responded to rare, but tragic, accidents that have occurred when parents have been carrying babies in a sling or carrier.

About Olwen:
After experiencing how a well-fitting baby carrier transformed family life, Olwen co-founded a Babywearing Ireland sling meeting in 2010. Struck by the challenge of translating personal experience into skilled support for other parents and caregivers, Olwen went on to qualify as a babywearing consultant in 2011. Awarded a Medical Trainer License in 2015 and a Consultant Trainer License in 2017, Olwen is part of an international network of trainers with Die Trageschule®—“The Carrying School” (est. 1998). She holds a PhD in English (cultural studies) and draws on many years of teaching and researching culture, identity, and gender. Olwen is passionate about infant and perinatal mental health and the role of community support. She has been active in many ways in Galway supporting parents. Olwen develops and delivers training for health care providers, babywearing consultants, and peer supporters. She also supports families through her private work as a babywearing consultant.
